Spirit of the North

Algoma Art Society (AAS) is an arts organization with a long history in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma region. The AAS website (www.algomaartsociety.ca) states that the group formed in 1948, and since then, members have focused their efforts on raising awareness and appreciation of the visual arts in the city and region, through exhibitions as well as educational and professional development opportunities for artists and the public.

The AAS website (www.algomaartsociety.ca) states that the group formed in 1948, and since then, members have focused their efforts on raising awareness and appreciation of the visual arts in the city and region, through exhibitions as well as educational and professional development opportunities for artists and the public.

Through the years, the AAS – both as a group and as individuals – have participated in a number of events and exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Algoma. Spirit of the North is an exhibition and sale of works by members that coincides with the 2013 Bon Soo Winter Carnival, open for public view in the AGA lobby from January 31st to February 9th. This exhibition of 24 works in a variety of media by 15 AAS members reflects upon the majestic and rugged beauty of the Algoma landscape in wintertime.

Concurrent to this exhibition, in celebration of the 65th anniversary of the AAS, works by members are on display in an exhibition entitled Celebrating the Love of Art, at Frida Café and Art in Sault Ste.
